Distance 8 miles Climb 1470' (450m) Walking Time 4 hours
Terrain Easy tracks up to the top of the hill behind the house then forest tracks past an Iron Age hill fort and down to the village of Llanafan. Returning on easy field paths with good views of the hills to the north, and of the Ystwyth valley.
Route-finding Easy
Start Blaen-y-ddôl
Leave Blaen-y-ddôl by the wooden gate to the west of the house. Just past the corner of the garden, turn right and head straight uphill beside the cypress trees, and continue in this direction until you reach an obvious grassy track just beyond the edge of the bracken. Turn left up this track for 75 yards, then, just past a rock outcrop, turn right up a wider stony track. Follow it until you cross the stream leading to Blaen-y-ddôl, then uphill to a junction with a larger track. Turn sharp left here and continue uphill to re-cross the stream. Go through the gate just after this, past two cottages on your right, and then uphill to another gate(way), after which the track swings right. Follow it across two large fields, to reach the road by the phone box in Brynafan.
Turn left along the road for 200 yards, past a small lake on the right, then turn left along a forest road, passing round a red steel barrier. Follow the forest road for 600 yards to a forest road junction. Turn left here, then after 200 yards turn right at a T-junction. Follow the forest road for half a mile until the mature conifers on your right end, then turn right up a grassy track with these conifers on your right and young spruces on your left. After 100 yards, when the edge of the mature conifers bears right, keep straight on along a grassy path which leads up to the highest point on the open area. This is the top of the Iron Age settlement. Just beyond the summit, you will reach a more distinct grassy path; turn left and follow it down to a forest road.
and so on.............. !
