Frongoch Lake 360° panorama (75Kb)

Frongoch Lake is south-west of Devil's Bridge by the hamlet of Trisant, between its church and chapel. It is an artificial lake, created to provide a supply of water (which was channelled along leats) to drive machinery at Frongoch mine, half a mile to the south. Frongoch mine was one of the richest and most productive in Cardiganshire, yielding many thousands of tons of lead (mostly) and zinc ores between the first working in 1759, and closure in the early twentieth century. The main function of water power at the mine was (ironically) pumping water out of the mine workings; in a dry summer, with water in short supply, mining often ceased because the workings became flooded.

The panorama is taken from the dam, which is visited on Hillscape Walking Holidays Four Ponds Walk. Trisant hamlet lies beyond the far (north) end of the lake. On the downstream side of the dam, the valley leads away and bends out of sight towards Frongoch mine, and on the skyline you can just glimpse the Cambrian Mountains.
